Small Group Sundays in person (Sept. 11-Oct. 30)

Alink is offering several small group opportunities with the goal of building social skills while having fun. Each group will consist of 4-6 young adults. Program director Matthew Selvin will aim to create groups of participants with similar abilities and interests. Groups will meet at Ometz’s L’Annexe space, on the second floor of the Sylvan Adams Y (5400 Westbury, in the Snowdon district).
10 am-12 pm Chat with Matt with special needs consultant Matthew Selvin. Participants will engage in conversations to discuss a variety of day-to-day issues that affect them, such as social dynamics and conflict resolution. Matt will offer strategies and tools to enhance social interaction and autonomy. Every second week, participants will go on outings to places they choose together. Matt works privately as a counselor to adults and families and runs Camp B’nai Brith’s special needs summer program.
10:30-11:30 am Fitness with Muhan Patel Focus will be on stretching, strengthening, cardio. When weather permits, program will take place outdoors. Muhan is a physical education student at McGill and runs the Power Buddies program.
1-3 pm Cooking with Sasha Goivin Participants will work cooperatively to make simple dishes: fruit salad, muffins, nachos and guacamole. Participants will decide together on what they want to make. Sasha is pursuing her masters in Concordia’s drama therapy program and loves to cook.
1-3 pm Songwriting with Jonathan Shrier, musician Do you want to learn how to create music? Participants will sing and share songs that inspire them and will work together to write and perform their own song. Jonathan is a singer- songwriter and plays several instruments.
3-5 p.m. Drama Therapy with Michael McCarthy, drama therapist. Participants will engage in fun role playing exercises to build social skills, including communication and conflict resolution. Michael is a graduate of Concordia’s masters program in arts therapies.
